Bobtail squids are always fun to watch if you are lucky enough to see them. They count among the smallest cephalopods known. I have encountered quite a few of them in Anilao (Philippines), Manado and Lembeh (Indonesia).
Bobtail Squid
The color of the Euprymna is usually black to blue, but I also found an individual that was brownish to red like the Hawaiian bobtail squid (E. scolopes). A closer look reveals that this is actually a very small octopus mimicking a bobtail squid:
Bobtail squids have a mutually beneficial relationship with bacteria called Vibrio fischeri that live on the squid's underside. The bacteria allow the squid to produce light which makes it more camouflaged when seen from underneath.
